Changing the Pace

Getting the most out of your exercise program can be challenging. It is easy to get bored with doing the same old exercises day in and day out. Sometimes, out of boredom, we then just stop exercising altogether. It is true that “variety is the spice of life.” And it is the same with our exercise programs.

Having a variety of ways to exercise is also great for your body. If we do the same program each week, the body accommodates to these exercises and is no longer challenged. Therefore, we don’t receive the same strength, cardiovascular or weight loss benefits. Cross training is the term that is used for athletes. For example, professional football players undergo their regular football practice but they also train in the pool and some teams are required to take ballet and yoga classes. It all helps to achieve a fit body.

Spicing up your program could occur in many ways: 1) try a new type of exercise class once a week to replace one of your workout days.  2) walk outside for your cardiovascular training (ensuring your heart rate stays in your exercise zone). 3) if you use stacked weight system for strengthening, try using dumbbells or elastic tubing one day a week with new exercises to challenge your muscles.  3) try interval training on the treadmill, bike, nustep, or elliptical. This involves going very fast for a couple minutes, then training slowly for a couple minutes for your entire program. It’s fun and the time goes faster.

If you have been doing the same program for 4 months, it is time to check in with your personal trainer or fitness consultant to change things up so your body can receive new challenges. Sometimes, when I go over an individual’s programs, I notice they are doing too much or staying at the gym too long and “over exercising.” Unfortunately, that can also lead to folks dropping out of exercise or getting injured.  Learning your personal exercise intensity scale or exercise heart rate can also help you get the most out of your program. Having different ways of exercising and participating in a class also gives you something to look forward to and can keep your interested.

So, spring into action and spice up your program to get new life in your exercise routine!
